Synopsis
Avalon (1990) is Barry Levinson's family drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows a Polish-Jewish family that crosses the Atlantic in the early 1900s and settles in Baltimore, chasing the promise the title stands for. Levinson based it on his own relatives, which is why every detail feels lived-in rather than invented.
Five brothers arrive one by one, find work, open a business, marry, raise kids. The story spans three generations at once: grandfather Sam keeps retelling the night he first saw the city lit up like fireworks, his son fights to hold the family business together, and the youngest boy grows into a wholly different kind of American. Armin Mueller-Stahl anchors it as the patriarch, with Aidan Quinn, Elizabeth Perkins and a very young Elijah Wood around him.
What Levinson is really filming is time itself — how a new television set and a move to the suburbs quietly fray bonds that held for decades. Randy Newman's wistful score carried several Oscar nominations, and the film closes out the director's Baltimore trilogy. Made for anyone who loves unhurried family sagas and long talks around the dinner table. Stream Avalon (1990) online on iFILM.
