Synopsis
Diner (1982) is Barry Levinson's semi-autobiographical comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Baltimore, 1959. Six guys barely past twenty keep coming back to the same all-night diner because nowhere else feels right.
Eddie (Steve Guttenberg) is about to get married and quizzes his fiancée on pro football stats to make sure she's the one. Shrevie (Daniel Stern) already got married and isn't so sure it was a good idea. Boogie (Mickey Rourke) is quiet about his gambling debts. Fenwick (Kevin Bacon) drinks too much and bets on the wrong horses. Billy (Tim Daly) is dodging a pregnant girlfriend. The conversations stretch past midnight — women, jazz, baseball, and the uneasy sense that they're running out of excuses not to grow up.
Levinson wrote the script from memory, drawing on his own Baltimore adolescence. The film launched the careers of nearly everyone in the cast and earned an original screenplay nomination at the Writers Guild of America. It doesn't go for easy laughs — it just nails the specific feeling of a friendship in its last weeks of being the whole world. Stream Diner (1982) online on iFILM.
