Synopsis
The Humbling (2014) is Barry Levinson's bitter comedy-drama from a Philip Roth novel, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Al Pacino is Simon Axler, a celebrated stage actor who forgets how to act mid-performance and lands in a psychiatric ward after a failed suicide attempt.
Back home in his empty Connecticut house, Simon is pulled out of his fog by Pegeen (Greta Gerwig), the daughter of old friends — decades younger, and freshly out of a relationship with a woman. The affair rattles both of them: he feels alive again, she's trying on a role, and the line between the stage and his life dissolves for good. Dry, caustic and oddly funny, the film leans entirely on Pacino's willingness to look old and lost, with Dylan Baker, Dianne Wiest and Charles Grodin alongside.
