Synopsis
Mona Lisa (1986) is Neil Jordan's British neo-noir, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Fresh out of prison, small-time crook George finds his tough-guy reputation has expired. The streets moved on without him.
His old boss hands him a job: driving Simone, a high-class call girl who glides between luxury hotels and the grim corners of King's Cross. The two grate on each other from the first ride. Then George falls, hard. Simone asks him to track down a girl she once knew, and the search drags him into a London underworld that chews up anyone soft. Bob Hoskins gives George a clumsy tenderness under all the bravado. Cathy Tyson stays cool and unreadable. Michael Caine, as the gangster Mortwell, is genuinely chilling.
Jordan wrote and directed, turning a crime plot into a sad study of love that can never be returned. Hoskins took the Best Actor prize at Cannes for this and landed an Oscar nod. If you like your noir built on broken hearts rather than gunfights, this one lands. Stream Mona Lisa (1986) online on iFILM.
