Synopsis
The End of the Affair (1999) — watch online on iFILM Neil Jordan's adaptation of Graham Greene's 1951 novel. Ralph Fiennes plays Maurice Bendrix, a novelist living in postwar London; Julianne Moore is Sarah Miles, the married woman he loved and lost without explanation in the summer of 1944.
Two years later, a chance encounter with Sarah's husband Henry (Stephen Rea) reopens everything Maurice had barely closed. He hires a private detective, reads a diary he has no right to, and sets out to find the betrayal he assumes must be there. What he finds instead forces him to reckon with something far outside the boundaries of jealousy or desire. Greene's novel turns the mechanism of an affair into a question about faith, and Jordan's film follows that move with unusual restraint.
Julianne Moore received a Golden Globe nomination for the role. The film competed for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Jordan and cinematographer Roger Pratt keep the palette cold and interiors dim — the look of a city still living under the weight of what just happened to it.
