Synopsis
Interiors (1978) is a Woody Allen drama available to watch online on iFILM — the film where he put away every joke and made his Bergman. Shot by Gordon Willis in near-static frames and cold, flat light, it is the most deliberately serious picture Allen ever directed.
Arthur walks out on his wife Eve, a controlling interior designer in the grip of a severe mental illness, to be with a warmer woman named Pearl. Their three adult daughters are left to manage the wreckage. Renata, played by Diane Keaton, is a poet who knows her husband can't match her. Joey is the most gifted of the three and the most paralysed by it. Flyn is the one who stopped feeling things long ago. The divorce doesn't just break up a marriage — it forces each woman to face what she has been performing and what she has been avoiding.
Geraldine Page picked up an Oscar nomination for Eve, one of the most difficult roles in the film. Allen got one too, for the screenplay. For viewers who want the director stripped of irony — this is what he looks like without it. Stream Interiors (1978) online on iFILM.
