Synopsis
The Reluctant Dragon (1941) is a Disney family comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Humorist Robert Benchley heads to Walt Disney Studios to pitch a story about a poetry-loving dragon, and ends up wandering the lot on a guided tour of how cartoons actually get made.
Most of the film is shot in live action: Benchley slips away from his chaperone to poke around the sound stage, the life-drawing class, the paint lab and the model department. You watch a cartoon grow from pencil roughs, see voice actors give a baby elephant his squeak, and learn how the multiplane camera fakes depth. Only at the end does the animated tale arrive — a dragon who would rather sip tea and recite verse than terrorize a village, and the boy who teaches a brave knight to befriend him instead.
It's an odd, charming hybrid: half behind-the-scenes look at Disney animation in its golden age, half gentle fable about not needing to be scary to belong. Kids enjoy the dragon; grown-ups get a rare peek inside the old studio. Stream The Reluctant Dragon (1941) online on iFILM.
