Synopsis
The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) — watch the classic Hollywood comedy online on iFILM, directed by Sam Wood. John P. Merrick (Charles Coburn) is one of the richest men alive and has arranged his entire life so that no one knows it. Among his many holdings is Neeley's Department Store, whose employees have just hung his effigy on the sidewalk — without any idea what he actually looks like.
Merrick's response is to go undercover as a shoe clerk under a false name. His colleagues turn out to be Mary (Jean Arthur) and her boyfriend Joe (Robert Cummings), both active organizers pushing for better conditions — and both completely oblivious to who they're standing next to. The longer Merrick spends ringing up sales and handling difficult customers, the less his original mission feels uncomplicated.
Coburn is the film's engine: a man of total authority slowly realizing he has none in a shoe department, played without a trace of self-pity or sentimentality. This is one of the sharpest class comedies Old Hollywood produced — genuinely funny and fair to both sides of the argument. Stream The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) online on iFILM.
