Almost Human (Season 1)

Almost Human (2013) is a sci-fi crime series you can watch online on iFILM, set in a 2048 where every police officer is legally required to ride with a combat android. Detective John Kennex hates the arrangement.

Kennex wakes from a 17-month coma missing part of his memory and most of one leg, now replaced by a synthetic limb. All he can hold onto is the ambush that killed his partner. Back on the force, he ejects his standard-issue robot from a moving car and ends up paired instead with Dorian — a decommissioned older model scrapped for having too many human feelings. Karl Urban and Michael Ealy carry the whole show on that man-and-machine rapport, with Minka Kelly, Lili Taylor and Mackenzie Crook rounding out the precinct.

The series came from J.H. Wyman, showrunner of Fringe, with Brad Anderson and Mimi Leder among the directors. It looks expensive — flying cars, rain-slicked near-future noir, and a streak of comedy that lands because the android is more human than the cop beside him. Thirteen episodes, one season, cancelled after year one, yet still remembered for that Urban-Ealy chemistry. Worth a look if you miss Fringe or Blade Runner.
