Synopsis

The Nonnatus House team reunites, but calm is in short supply: new management under Sister Ursula upends the old order and makes calls that rub everyone the wrong way. An explosion at the docks brings grief to the whole district. From Whitehall comes a paper to shut down small maternity homes in favour of large general hospitals, and Dr Turner and Shelagh face an inspection of their own practice. A new recruit, Nurse Valerie Dyer, arrives, while the whereabouts of Sister Mary Cynthia weigh on everyone. And the grim legacy of thalidomide grows clearer as the Mulluck family learns to raise a disabled child.
