Synopsis

A new midwife arrives at Nonnatus House. Lucille Anderson is good at the work and meets ugly prejudice for it when she cares for a sick young mother. The season widens what the nurses face: leprosy, a stroke patient threatened with eviction, Huntington's chorea, Sister Monica Joan's failing eyesight and cataract surgery. Dr Turner and Nurse Crane scramble over a possible smallpox case, Trixie and Christopher feel the strain, and Shelagh's decision to hire an au pair upends the Turner household.
