Synopsis
What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) is an American biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Brian Gibson adapted Tina Turner's autobiography, and the two lead performances are what make it land: Angela Bassett earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and Laurence Fishburne took home the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Ike Turner.
The film traces Anna Mae Bullock from a small town in Tennessee to the stages of St. Louis, where she crossed paths with Ike Turner, joined his band and became Tina. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue sold out arenas for years. Off stage, those same years were sixteen rounds of control and abuse — the film does not look away from that, and it does not soften Ike into something easier to watch.
Bassett plays Tina not as a legend building her myth but as a specific woman deciding, at a specific moment, to stop taking it. That distinction is what separates the film from a standard rise-and-triumph story. Stream What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) online on iFILM.
