Synopsis
Metallica: Through the Never (2013) is a music film directed by Nimród Antal, available to watch online on iFILM. It fuses a live stadium concert with a fictional narrative — both shot simultaneously and cut together as a single experience.
Trip, a young roadie played by Dane DeHaan, is sent to retrieve a bag before the show ends. The errand sounds routine. Outside the arena the city is in open riot, and Trip's straightforward task spirals into something much stranger — burning streets, a masked figure on horseback, chaos without explanation. Inside, Metallica play on: James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo work through a setlist that hits Master of Puppets, One and Ride the Lightning among others.
Antal shot the whole thing in IMAX, and the format does the work — the concert footage has physical weight, not just volume. For Metallica fans this is an archival document of the band at full power; for everyone else it is a strange, visually ambitious genre experiment that has no real equivalent.
