Sledge Hammer! (Seasons 1–2)

Sledge Hammer! (1986–1988) is a satirical cop sitcom you can watch online on iFILM, and it loves nothing more than mocking the trigger-happy action hero. Inspector Hammer cares about his revolver more than any person alive, solves every case with brute force, and somehow always walks away clean.

Creator Alan Spencer aimed straight at the Dirty Harry archetype. His Hammer, played deadpan by David Rasche, talks to his gun, blows up a car to make a parking point, and is convinced he's a brilliant detective. Partner Dori Doreau tries to keep him inside the law, and the Captain reaches for his blood pressure after every report. The hero means his motto completely: "Trust me, I know what I'm doing." Al Jean and Mike Reiss, later the brains behind The Simpsons, wrote and story-edited the show.
