Synopsis
Addicted to Love (1997) is a dark romantic comedy you can watch online on iFILM, and it has a meaner streak than most. Sam, a soft-spoken astronomer, falls apart when his girlfriend Linda moves to New York and simply doesn't come back. So he follows her, squats in the empty building across the street, and waits for her new romance to collapse on its own.
Matthew Broderick plays Sam; Meg Ryan plays Maggie, and she is nobody's sweetheart here. Maggie was dumped by Anton (Tcheky Karyo), the same smooth French restaurateur who stole Linda away, and she wants revenge served cold and cruel. The two strangers turn the abandoned loft into a surveillance den, rigging a camera obscura on the apartment opposite and dreaming up nastier and nastier sabotage.
Directed by Griffin Dunne, the film is sharper and stranger than its rom-com packaging suggests, more interested in obsession than in happy endings. Casting two of the decade's most likable stars and letting them play petty and bitter is the whole joke, and it mostly works. For anyone tired of sugary love stories, this one has teeth.
