Synopsis
The German Doctor (Wakolda, 2013) is an Argentine historical thriller from Lucía Puenzo that you can watch online on iFILM. Patagonia, 1960: on the road to Lake Nahuel Huapi, a polished German physician attaches himself to a family reopening a lakeside guesthouse.
He fixates on twelve-year-old Lilith, who is small for her age, and offers to "help" her grow with hormone injections. Her mother Eva is carrying twins, and before long his attention drifts toward her too. What nobody in the house knows is that their charming guest is Josef Mengele, the Auschwitz "Angel of Death" in hiding across South America. The longer he stays, the plainer his obsession with breeding the perfect body becomes.
Puenzo adapted her own novel; the title comes from Wakolda, a porcelain doll the father builds in his workshop. Àlex Brendemühl plays Mengele with a stillness that makes him scarier, while pop star Natalia Oreiro is the mother who reads the danger too late. The film was Argentina's Oscar submission. Cold, exacting dread with not a drop of blood. Stream The German Doctor online on iFILM.
