Synopsis
The Devil Rides Out (1968) is a Hammer Horror classic you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Terence Fisher and adapted from Dennis Wheatley's 1934 novel. Christopher Lee — cast here against type as the hero — plays the Duc de Richelieu, a man of aristocratic cool who discovers his young ward Simon has been drawn into a Satanic cult led by the formidable occultist Mocata, played by Charles Gray.
Richelieu and his friend Rex Van Ryn snatch Simon from a black mass gathering. That act of rescue makes them targets. Mocata retaliates with escalating supernatural force: apparitions, demonic riders, and eventually a confrontation inside a chalk-drawn pentacle that the heroes cannot leave no matter what appears outside it. The film's tension comes not from gore but from atmosphere — a committed belief in its own occult logic that never winks at the audience.
Seeing Lee on the right side of a supernatural fight is genuinely unusual, and he handles it with complete conviction. Fisher's direction keeps the dread building steadily across 96 minutes, and the final ritual sequence delivers on everything the film has been promising. One of Hammer's best.
