Synopsis
The Tiger of Eschnapur (Der Tiger von Eschnapur, 1959) is a Fritz Lang adventure melodrama you can watch online on iFILM. A German architect arrives in the invented kingdom of Eschnapur at a maharaja's invitation and walks into a romance forbidden on pain of death.
Harald Berger (Paul Hubschmid) saves a temple dancer, Seetha (Debra Paget), from a tiger and earns the trust of the ruler, Chandra. The trouble is that Seetha is promised to the maharaja himself, and Berger falls for her anyway. Once the secret slips out, the man who welcomed him turns avenger: the lovers flee across the desert while back at the palace Chandra's own brother quietly plots to take his throne.
This is the first half of Lang's Indian diptych — a project he carried from his silent-era days and finally returned to after decades in Hollywood. It's shot big: full-scale palace sets, Debra Paget's notorious snake dance, and saturated color instead of the noir black-and-white Lang was known for. Best suited to anyone who loves old studio adventure with exotica, doomed passion and not a trace of irony. Stream The Tiger of Eschnapur (1959) online on iFILM.
