Synopsis
Clash by Night (1952) is a Fritz Lang drama you can watch online on iFILM. Worn down after ten years away, Mae Doyle drifts back to the fishing town of Monterey she once fled in search of something better.
Out of sheer weariness she marries Jerry, a kind, dependable fisherman who bores her a little. The calm doesn't hold. She's pulled toward his best friend Earl, a sour projectionist who sneers at everything and says out loud the things she won't admit to herself. Nearby, young Peggy — one of Marilyn Monroe's first real roles — sweats it out at the cannery, dreaming of the same escape Mae once chased. Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Ryan play their attraction in low, dangerous registers.
Lang, the German expressionist, moved Clifford Odets' stage play to the Pacific coast and shot a melodrama with noir in its bones: fog, nets, the smell of fish, people boxed in by their own choices. What lingers isn't the plot but the grown-up honesty — nobody here gets what they want. Stream Clash by Night (1952) online on iFILM.
