Beyond the Clouds

Beyond the Clouds (Al di là delle nuvole, 1995) is Michelangelo Antonioni's quiet romance, available to watch online on iFILM. A film director drifts through Ferrara, Paris and Portofino with his camera, and four stories of desire surface around him.

Each tale sets a man and a woman on the edge of an intimacy that may never quite arrive. John Malkovich plays the wandering director who keeps glimpsing other people's affairs. Sophie Marceau, Vincent Perez, Jean Reno, Irène Jacob and Fanny Ardant live out these brief encounters, while Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau share a wry vignette about old age and a painting.

This was Antonioni's final feature. A stroke had left him barely able to speak, so Wim Wenders stood by on set to help him finish it.
