Cyclo

Cyclo (Xích lô, 1995) is Tran Anh Hung's crime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A nameless young man pedals a bicycle taxi through Ho Chi Minh City, exactly as his father did — until a truck killed him.

The cyclo is all that feeds his sister and grandfather, so when a rival gang steals it, the boy is left with nothing. A shadowy woman known only as the Madame pulls him into errands that soon turn bloody, while his older sister drifts toward a poet-pimp played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai. There's no postcard version of the city here — just heat, crush and violence growing straight out of plain poverty.

Tran films a mood more than a story: paint, water, rain and blood blur into a nearly wordless poem about Saigon. The picture took the Golden Lion, Venice's top prize, and still ranks among the strongest Vietnamese cinema ever made. Not an easy night in — it's harsh, slow and hypnotic.
