Synopsis
Watch A Place in the Sun (1951) online — George Stevens' American drama starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, and Shelley Winters. Six Academy Awards, 122 minutes, and still one of the sharpest portraits of ambition gone wrong.
George Eastman arrives in town poor, lands a factory job through a wealthy relative, and starts seeing Alice, a co-worker who falls for him completely. Then a party introduces him to Angela Vickers — and Taylor plays her as something that makes every other option look grey. Clift carries the weight of a man trying to climb out of one life and into another while the first one refuses to let go.
Adapted from Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy, the film scooped up Oscars including Best Director and Best Cinematography for William Mellor — those tight close-up shots of Clift and Taylor practically invented a grammar for screen desire. What Stevens built here is not just a romance but a cold-eyed account of what the American dream costs the people left at the bottom. Stream A Place in the Sun online on iFILM.
