Synopsis

Swing Time (1936) is an RKO musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by George Stevens and starring the iconic pair Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers at the peak of their partnership.

Lucky Garnett is a gambler and dancer who misses his own wedding — thanks to a prank about trouser cuffs — and gets an ultimatum from his fiancée's father: come back with $25,000 or don't come back at all. In New York he meets dance instructor Penny Carroll. They click on the floor immediately. Earning those thousands turns out to be something Lucky keeps failing to do, conveniently and repeatedly.

Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields wrote the score, including "The Way You Look Tonight," which took home the Oscar for Best Original Song. The "Never Gonna Dance" sequence took 47 takes; Rogers' feet were bleeding by the end. For a film built on lightness and speed, Swing Time carries real weight — and it earns it.
