Synopsis
Maborosi (幻の光, 1995) is a Japanese drama directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, available to watch online on iFILM. It was his first feature film — quiet, almost wordless, and built around a question that has no answer.
A young Osaka woman named Yumiko loses her husband to a sudden, unexplained death. She survives, eventually remarries, and moves with her small son to a fishing village on the Sea of Japan coast. The new life is calm. Her second husband is kind. Yet the unanswered why follows her everywhere — a persistent, unplaceable grief the film renders through long silences and precise, painterly compositions rather than dramatic confrontation. Makiko Esumi carries Yumiko with very little dialogue, and Tadanobu Asano plays the second husband. Kore-eda draws a sharp line between mourning that has an object and the kind that just drifts.
His later work — Nobody Knows, Shoplifters — is better known outside Japan, but Maborosi is where that particular patience with human sorrow first took shape on screen. Stream Maborosi (1995) online on iFILM.
