Synopsis
One Day in September (1999), directed by Kevin Macdonald and narrated by Michael Douglas, is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM. It picked up the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2000 ceremony.
In the early hours of September 5, 1972, eight members of a Palestinian faction scaled the fence into Munich's Olympic Village and took eleven Israeli athletes hostage. Macdonald reconstructs what followed — the failed negotiations, the disastrous police operation at Fürstenfeldbruck airfield, the cover-ups that stretched across decades. The film's most striking element is Jamal Al Gashey, the only surviving attacker, speaking on camera for the first time in twenty-five years.
It is not a comfortable film. Macdonald shows how a chain of decisions, each defensible in isolation, cost eleven lives — and how German authorities worked for years to bury that accounting. Stream One Day in September (1999) online on iFILM.
