The film breaks into three chapters set years apart. In 1961, elderly Edith (Vanessa Redgrave) loses her partner and discovers that, in the eyes of the law and the neighbors, she counts as nothing in the home they shared. In 1972, a young campus activist falls for a woman who reads as butch, and meets judgment from inside her own circle. In 2000, a couple played by Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Stone set out to have a baby and go looking for a donor. Each segment has its own director and its own register, sliding from quiet grief toward something close to comedy.

Jane Anderson, Martha Coolidge and Anne Heche split the directing, while the ensemble pulls in Michelle Williams, Chloë Sevigny, Natasha Lyonne and Regina King.
