Synopsis
Week End (1967), directed by Jean-Luc Godard, is a French-Italian satirical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Roland and Corinne set off for a countryside weekend — each quietly plotting to murder the other before the in-laws' inheritance changes hands.
The drive turns into something closer to the end of civilization. Burning cars pile up for miles. Maoist guerrillas appear in the middle of a field. Cannibalism follows. Godard shoots it all with deliberate, cool detachment — including an unbroken eight-minute tracking shot of a traffic jam that film students still argue about today. The French bourgeoisie is on trial, and the verdict is not kind.
Released the same year as the May 1968 protests were gathering energy, Week End announced Godard's break from narrative cinema altogether — he titled the closing frames "End of Cinema." If you want to see a filmmaker dismantle the road-trip comedy and rebuild it as a political grenade, this is the film. Stream Week End (1967) online on iFILM.
