Synopsis
The Message (1976) is a sweeping historical epic you can watch online on iFILM. Director Moustapha Akkad takes us to seventh-century Mecca — a trading city of merchants and idols, where a small group of people first hears a call to worship one God.
The film traces the early years of Islam: the first revelations, the community's hidden beginnings, the migration to Medina, and the long struggle against Mecca's rulers, Abu Sufyan and his fierce wife Hind. The Prophet Muhammad himself never appears on screen. The camera looks through his eyes instead, and everyone speaks straight into the lens — a bold choice made out of deep respect for tradition. Anthony Quinn plays Hamza, the Prophet's uncle and protector; Irene Papas brings a cold fury to Hind.
Akkad shot two versions at once, in Arabic and in English, with separate casts, building his deserts and battles across Libya and Morocco. Nearly three hours of clashing armies, caravans, and a faith taking root one believer at a time. It's for anyone curious about the roots of a world religion, told on an old-Hollywood scale and without a lecture. Stream The Message (1976) online on iFILM.
