Somewhere in the Night

Nancy Guild plays the nightclub singer caught up in the investigation; Lloyd Nolan is the detective who may be an ally or a watchdog — it takes a while to tell. What makes the film land is Mankiewicz's framing: Taylor doesn't just fear being killed. He fears what he might find out about himself. The amnesia isn't a plot device. It's the subject.
