Synopsis
Paisà (1946) is Roberto Rossellini's Italian war drama — the second film in his War Trilogy — you can watch online on iFILM. Rossellini shot it immediately after the fighting ended, retracing the Allied advance from Sicily northward to the Po Valley delta.
Six separate episodes, six towns, eighteen months of war compressed into a single film. A Sicilian girl and an American patrol. A Black soldier in the rubble of Naples. A British nurse searching a burning Florence for someone she loves. Monks in an Apennine monastery confronted by three American chaplains of different faiths. Partisans in the waterlogged northern lowlands facing the last days of the German withdrawal. None of these people know one another. What links them is the same war catching everyone in its machinery. Giulietta Masina appears briefly in one of the early episodes.
Rossellini cast non-professional actors on actual destroyed locations — not because of budget, but because he believed the rubble told the truth better than any studio set. That approach, later labeled Italian neorealism, quietly rewrote the grammar of war cinema. Stream Paisà (1946) online on iFILM.
