Synopsis
Watch Somewhere in the Night (1946) online on iFILM — a Fox film noir directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, his last genre assignment before he moved into prestige territory with All About Eve. Marine George Taylor (John Hodiak) comes home from the Pacific with no memory and a threatening note in his wallet signed by someone named Larry Cravat.
The search for an identity pulls him through Los Angeles nightclubs, a three-year-old murder case, and a missing two million dollars that several people would kill to recover. Nancy Guild plays the nightclub singer caught up in the investigation; Lloyd Nolan is the detective who may be an ally or a watchdog — it takes a while to tell. What makes the film land is Mankiewicz's framing: Taylor doesn't just fear being killed. He fears what he might find out about himself. The amnesia isn't a plot device. It's the subject.
