Synopsis
The Country Girl (1954) is a stage-rooted drama you can watch online on iFILM. George Seaton adapted Clifford Odets's play into a tight three-hander, with Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and William Holden circling one another scene after scene.
Frank Elgin (Crosby) gets one last shot at a comeback: the lead in a new musical. He was a star once, but years of drinking and an old private grief have left him fragile and unsure of himself. Director Bernie Dodd (Holden) decides Frank's real problem is his wife, Georgie — a worn, quiet woman he reads as a cold manipulator pulling her husband down. Bit by bit the picture flips. She turns out to be the one holding him together through every relapse he brings on himself.
Cast against her glamorous image — plain, tired, stripped of the usual polish — Grace Kelly won the Best Actress Oscar here, beating the season's frontrunner. It's a hushed, grown-up film about codependency, blame and the cost of someone else's talent, where the drama lives in the people rather than the plot. Watch The Country Girl (1954) online on iFILM.
