About

Synopsis

Carmen Jones (1954) is Otto Preminger's musical melodrama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It takes Bizet's opera, hands it an all-Black cast, and resets the story in a wartime American South where the arias come out as swing and blues.

Carmen Jones stitches parachutes at a Southern factory and turns the head of every soldier on the nearby base. She only wants Joe, though — a corporal already engaged to gentle Cindy Lou and bound for flight school. One look from Carmen and Joe's orderly life starts coming apart. Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte lead, with Pearl Bailey and a teenage Diahann Carroll close behind.

There's history riding on it. Dandridge became the first Black woman ever nominated for the Best Actress Oscar, even though the singing voice you hear is opera soprano Marilyn Horne, then still a student. Preminger shoots it bright, sweaty and doomed — a story about a passion nobody gets to control. Stream Carmen Jones (1954) online on iFILM.
