Synopsis
Quai des Orfèvres (1947) is a landmark French noir thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Henri-Georges Clouzot shot this rain-soaked Paris murder mystery in the rubble of postwar France, and it remains sharper than most crime films made since.
Cabaret singer Jenny (Suzy Delair) chases the spotlight and isn't above using the wrong men to get there. Her jealous pianist husband Maurice (Bernard Blier) quietly seethes. When Jenny's wealthy admirer turns up dead, the case lands with Inspector Antoine — played by Louis Jouvet as a quietly ferocious detective who raises a mixed-race child alone and reads people the way others read newspapers. Everyone in the triangle is hiding something; Antoine just waits for the cracks to show.
The film took the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice Film Festival, marking Clouzot's comeback after wartime silence. What sets it apart is the refusal to sentimentalize: the characters are flawed, the resolution is cold, and the atmosphere of damp cobblestones and backstage ambition never lets up.
