Synopsis
The Cruel Sea (1953) is a British war film you can watch online on iFILM, produced at Ealing Studios. Director Charles Frend adapted Nicholas Monsarrat's bestselling novel — the same Monsarrat who spent four years on convoy duty as a Royal Navy officer and wrote the book from that experience.
Commander Ericson (Jack Hawkins) takes HMS Compass Rose out of port in November 1939 with officers who are barely trained and a war that barely looks like one yet. Donald Sinden plays the first officer learning fast, with Denholm Elliott, Stanley Baker, and Virginia McKenna filling out the crew. Hawkins plays exhaustion the way most actors play heroism. The film's most devastating scene — Ericson choosing between a submarine kill and his own men in the freezing water — plays out without any music at all.
Frend shot in the open Atlantic with a real naval fleet. No backlot, no tank. The cold and the dread come through without assistance. Stream The Cruel Sea (1953) on iFILM.
