Synopsis
Taipei Story (1985) is a quiet drama from Taiwanese director Edward Yang you can watch online on iFILM. Lung once shone in a youth baseball league; now he runs a fabric shop and can't let go of the past.
His girlfriend Chin looks the other way — toward a business of her own and a future in the United States. They've been together since childhood, but the city is changing faster than they are. Lung drains his savings to bail her father out of debt and clings to baseball and old loyalties, while Chin pushes ahead. What pulls them apart isn't a fight. It's the slow realization that they no longer want the same life.
Lung is played by Hou Hsiao-hsien, soon to become a giant of Taiwanese cinema himself, opposite singer Tsai Chin. A cornerstone of the Taiwanese New Wave, the film reads modern Taipei through two people stranded between tradition and ambition.
