Eleven-year-old Davey copes with his mother's death and his distant father by escaping into video games and an imaginary hero: secret agent Jack Flack, played by Dabney Coleman, who also plays Davey's dad. Then a dying FBI agent hands him a game cartridge loaded with stolen government secrets, and real killers start hunting him through the streets of San Antonio. No grown-up believes a word he says, so Davey has only his friend Kim and the advice of a spy who doesn't exist.
Henry Thomas, fresh off E.T., anchors the film with that same wide-eyed conviction. Director Richard Franklin, a Hitchcock protégé, plays the suspense straight and never softens it for the family label.
