Robin of Sherwood (Seasons 1–3)

Robin of Sherwood (1984–1986) is a British fantasy series you can watch online on iFILM. This take on the outlaw legend adds a pagan layer the old swashbucklers never had: Robin of Loxley is chosen as a champion by Herne the Hunter, an antlered forest spirit out of pre-Christian myth. The show's tagline doesn't hold back — "The definitive version of the story."

Robin gathers his band — Little John, Friar Tuck, the hot-tempered Will Scarlet, Lady Marian — and wages a guerrilla war on the Norman nobles bleeding the Saxon poor. Their enemies aren't only the Sheriff of Nottingham's men, though: sorcerers, old prophecies and dark rites all stand between the outlaws and Sherwood. A young Ray Winstone plays Will Scarlet. Michael Praed wears the hood for two seasons before Jason Connery, son of Sean, steps in for the third.

Four decades on, it still carries a cult reputation, mostly for its mood: mud, mist and witchcraft in place of the tidy heroics of earlier versions. The Celtic score by Irish band Clannad, which won a BAFTA, does half the work of conjuring that forest. One for fans of old-school, shadowy heroic fantasy.
