Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (攻殻機動隊 SAC, 2002) is a Japanese cyberpunk anime series — watch online on iFILM. Major Motoko Kusanagi commands Section 9, a covert unit that handles the cases ordinary law enforcement can't touch: cyberterrorism, hacked consciousnesses, rogue military hardware, politically inconvenient crimes.

Threading through the first season is the Laughing Man case — a hacker who vanished years ago and left behind a trail of compromised cyborgs and a cover-up that reaches deep into the government. Batou, Togusa, and the rest of Section 9 piece it together one stand-alone episode at a time. Each case works on its own; the larger conspiracy accumulates underneath.

The series takes the philosophical questions Mamoru Oshii raised in the 1995 film — where does identity end when the body is machinery — and gives them room to breathe across a full television run.
