Synopsis
The Bank Dick (1940) is a classic American comedy starring W.C. Fields that you can watch online on iFILM. Egbert Sousé is a small-town tippler with no job and no ambition, until a fleeing bank robber trips over his bench and Egbert wakes up the next morning hailed as a local hero.
His reward for that accidental bravery is a post as the bank's guard. Things spiral from there. A smooth con man talks him into buying shares in a shaky gold-mine venture, so Egbert pressures a timid teller named Og into quietly lending him cash straight from the bank — to be paid back the instant the stock pays off. Naturally, that is the exact moment a bank examiner named Snoopington shows up unannounced.
Edward F. Cline directed, while Fields wrote the script himself under one of his trademark ridiculous pen names. Seventy-two minutes of muttered one-liners, domestic chaos and a wild closing car chase. The appeal is simple: this is undiluted Fields, his grumbling antihero and his contempt for respectability in full swing. A treat for fans of vintage screwball comedy and anyone curious about a film later added to the National Film Registry. Stream The Bank Dick (1940) online on iFILM.
