Synopsis
The Long Voyage Home (1940) is John Ford's wartime drama, free to watch online on iFILM. The freighter Glencairn carries a hold full of explosives across the Atlantic, no escort in sight, with German U-boats somewhere below.
The crew comes from everywhere, and each man drags his own ache for dry land aboard. Young Swede Ole just wants to get back to his mother's farm; the rest drown their fear of mines in cheap whiskey and dockside brawls. John Wayne sheds the cowboy swagger to play a gentle, homesick sailor, with Thomas Mitchell beside him as the loud, loyal Driscoll. Ford built the film out of four Eugene O'Neill one-act plays, stitched into a single voyage that feels like a whole lifetime.
Cinematographer Gregg Toland shaped nearly every frame from fog and shadow, a year before he'd do the same for Citizen Kane. It's a quiet, bruised film about men with no real home to sail toward. Stream The Long Voyage Home online on iFILM.
