Synopsis
Grey Owl (1999) is a biographical drama directed by Richard Attenborough that you can watch online on iFILM. Pierce Brosnan plays Archie Belaney, a trapper working the forests of northern Canada in the 1930s who took a Native name, Grey Owl, and slowly transformed from a hunter into one of the continent's earliest voices for wilderness conservation.
The change starts with Anahareo — Annie Galipeau plays the young Iroquois woman who refuses to watch trapped animals suffer. She stays. Archie puts down his traps, starts writing about the northern lakes and the beavers he once hunted, and eventually works for Parks Canada at a reserve in Prince Albert National Park. His lectures in England pack halls. He's celebrated as a living symbol of indigenous life. Then, after his death in 1938, the papers reveal the truth about who he actually was.
Attenborough made something rare: a quiet film about a man who reinvented himself so completely that the reinvention became real. Stream Grey Owl (1999) online on iFILM.
