Synopsis
King Kong Escapes (1967) is a Toho kaiju romp you can watch online on iFILM. Behind the camera is Ishiro Honda, the man who launched Godzilla back in 1954.
The mad Dr. Who builds a mechanical ape, Mechani-Kong, to mine radioactive Element X beneath the North Pole. When the robot seizes up, he kidnaps the real Kong instead. Akira Takarada, Mie Hama, Rhodes Reason and Linda Miller round out the cast, and the whole thing climaxes with Kong brawling his metal twin atop Tokyo Tower.
The movie grew out of the Rankin/Bass cartoon "The King Kong Show," with effects staged by Eiji Tsuburaya, Honda's Godzilla collaborator.
