Synopsis
Woman in Chains (La Prisonnière, 1968) is a French-Italian psychological thriller you can watch online on iFILM — the last completed film by Henri-Georges Clouzot, the director whose earlier Diabolique (1955) and The Wages of Fear (1953) put French suspense cinema on the map.
Josée (Elisabeth Wiener) is in a loose, open arrangement with her sculptor husband Gilbert when she drifts into the orbit of Stanislas (Laurent Terzieff), the director of a modern art gallery. He is controlled and difficult to read. The attraction makes sense until it doesn't — Stanislas keeps a private collection of photographs of a deeply unsettling nature, and Josée finds herself unable to look away. Michel Piccoli appears in a supporting role.
Clouzot was ill during production and halted shooting twice. The film is uneven, but unmistakably his — he spent his career mapping how control and desire interlock, and here he does it through the frame of contemporary art. Stream Woman in Chains (1968) online on iFILM.
