Synopsis

Francesco comes home from war sick and adrift. The old life — feasts, girls, his father's cloth trade — suddenly feels hollow to him. As he recovers, the world starts reaching him differently: he delights in birds, fields and plain labor, then renounces his inheritance in front of the whole town and sets about rebuilding a crumbling church with his bare hands. His father rages, his friends are baffled, and the first followers begin to gather around him.
Zeffirelli didn't film a dry saint's life but a hymn to youth and a revolt against greed, and the mood speaks plainly to the hippie spirit of the early seventies. Scotsman Donovan wrote and sang the songs, while Alec Guinness turns up as Pope Innocent III. The film is slow, luminous and pastoral, made for a viewer ready to contemplate rather than chase action.
