His father rages, his friends are baffled, and the first followers begin to gather around him.
Zeffirelli didn't film a dry saint's life but a hymn to youth and a revolt against greed, and the mood speaks plainly to the hippie spirit of the early seventies. Scotsman Donovan wrote and sang the songs, while Alec Guinness turns up as Pope Innocent III. The film is slow, luminous and pastoral, made for a viewer ready to contemplate rather than chase action.
