Synopsis
Under the Volcano (1984) is John Huston's drama you can watch online on iFILM. Mexico, the 1939 Day of the Dead, war gathering in Europe — and Geoffrey Firmin, a British consul drinking himself toward the edge.
His ex-wife Yvonne comes back to the dusty town hoping to pull him out of the bottle and rebuild what's left of their marriage. His idealistic half-brother Hugh watches the slow ruin and can do nothing to stop it. But mezcal wins every argument, and each rescue attempt only hurries the fall. Albert Finney plays the consul not as a drunk but as a man calmly walking off a cliff.
Huston took on Malcolm Lowry's "unfilmable" novel and made one of cinema's bleakest portraits of addiction. Finney landed an Oscar nomination for the role; Jacqueline Bisset and Anthony Andrews fill the margins while the Mexican landscape and Day of the Dead rituals turn the story into a descent into hell. Not an easy night in — a beautiful, punishing one. Stream Under the Volcano (1984) online on iFILM.
