Synopsis
Freud: The Secret Passion (1962) is a biographical drama directed by John Huston — watch it online on iFILM, with Montgomery Clift as Sigmund Freud.
In 1880s Vienna, Freud's use of hypnosis to treat hysteria turned him into a target for the medical establishment. Senior professors demanded he abandon the experiments. He kept going, working through private patients and accumulating case histories that kept pointing toward the same thing: a theory of the unconscious that the era wasn't ready to hear. Susannah York plays the patient whose case becomes the clearest window into what Freud is actually uncovering.
Huston doesn't build a monument — he builds a portrait of a man under sustained institutional pressure. Clift, himself notoriously fragile by the early 1960s, brings a restless, almost feverish quality to the role that fits Freud's driven, isolated working style better than composed heroism ever could.
