Pepa works as a dubbing actress in Madrid. Her lover Iván vanishes without a word — just an answering machine message. While she tries to track him down, her rooftop apartment fills with uninvited guests: Iván's neurotic wife, his son Carlos (Antonio Banderas), and her friend Candela, tangled up in a terrorist plot she wants no part of.

Almodóvar shot this in 1987 on a tight Madrid budget — it walked away with four Goya Awards, including best film, and landed on the Oscar shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film.
