Synopsis
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) is a musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Colin Higgins and starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton. It's drawn from a real story: the Chicken Ranch brothel in La Grange, Texas, which ran for well over a century before a televangelist forced it to close.
Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (Reynolds) has always looked the other way; Miss Mona (Parton) has always kept the Chicken Ranch running quietly. Then crusading TV host Melvin Thorpe (Dom DeLuise) turns his cameras on the place and manufactures a scandal out of thin air. The whole comedy turns on that gap — the genuine harm done by the televised spectacle versus the non-harm of the place it's trying to shut down. Reynolds and Parton clearly enjoyed making this, and Charles Durning's two-stepping governor landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
