Synopsis
Veronika Voss (Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss, 1982) is a Rainer Werner Fassbinder drama you can watch online on iFILM. Munich, 1955. Sports writer Robert Krohn shares his umbrella with a stranger caught in the rain. She turns out to be Veronika Voss, once a luminous screen actress whose name now means almost nothing.
What draws Veronika to Robert is that he doesn't recognize her and never grovels. They grow close, but he soon notices something off: this glamorous, seemingly well-off woman behaves as if she belongs to someone else, and at times she shakes as though deprived of something she cannot live without. Behind the facade stands Dr. Marianne Katz, who keeps the star hooked on morphine and quietly strips her of everything she has left. Robert sets out to learn who really holds Veronika captive — and whether he can pull her free.
Fassbinder shot the film in hard, gleaming black and white, borrowing the gloss of old Hollywood melodrama only to hollow it out from inside. It closes his BRD Trilogy about postwar Germany and took home the Golden Bear at Berlin. Rosel Zech plays the fading diva with a rawness that's painful to watch. Cold, gorgeous and merciless — arthouse drama for viewers who don't need a consoling ending. Stream Veronika Voss (1982) online on iFILM.
